Timber

Why Pinewood?

Pine wood is a strong and very versatile timber, that is widely used for a range of structural and decorative applications including framing, lining, glue laminated beams, veneer and plywood. When appropriately treated, it can be used in many exposed structural and non‐structural applications. It is easily treated and light, while still having good bending and strength properties.

Other features of Pinewood are:

  • Good finish when cut and sanded
  • Easy to nail with good nail holding capacity
  • Paint and other coatings dry to a good finish
  • Little 'resin bleeding' once dried
  • Machines well and compares favourably with a variety of other traded timbers

Pines are evergreen trees and are a renewable resource; therefore pinewood is cheaper than other varieties of wood and also available in abundance.

SAWN TIMBER

We at Tirupati Tradelinks (P) Ltd. provide Sawn Timber to our customers in desired size. Sawn Timber is timber that is cut from logs into different sizes. It is generally cut into varying rectangular widths and lengths.

Structural timber and many appearance products are cut by Backsawn method. With backsawn timber, the long face of each board is close to a tangential face, and the short face is close to a radial face. Growth rings are parallel to the long edge and the wide face does not intersect many growth rings.

The advantages of back sawn timber include:

  • Seasons more rapidly
  • Good figure on face
  • Less prone to splitting when nailing
  • Wide sections possible
  • Few knots on edge

The disadvantages of back sawn timber include:

  • Shrink more across width when drying
  • More likely to warp and cup

dried

Kiln drying is an industrial unit operation used to accelerate the drying of wood. A wood drying kiln is an enclosed space where air speed, temperature and humidity are controlled. Natural air drying of wood can take weeks, while a wood drying kiln can complete the process in less than a day.

Kiln dried timber has a moisture content between 10 and 15%. The benefit of kiln drying the timber is that it is dried in a controlled environment, has rigorous testing, and is extremely quick giving a higher quality end product. Bugs and insects are also killed during the drying process. Therefore it can be more cost effective and less likely to have distortion, staining or drying stresses (i.e. warping or bowing).
